    Abstract: I had the honor and great pleasure of collaborating closely with Jean-Pierre over a period of 10 years (2002-2012). In this talk I will recall our work on adjoint methods for underwater geoacoustics, where we coupled acoustic wave propagation with semi-automatic differentiation to solve inverse problems. In the second part of the talk I will present recent work, in collaboration with H. Glotin (U. Toulon), on underwater acoustic monitoring of whales. Here we are coupling classical pde-based acoustic modelling (direct and inverse) with modern machine learning approaches
