Abstract: Professor Jean-Pierre Hermand was a colleague, mentor, and dear friend to many in the acoustics community, which was why his unexpected passing last September was such an immense loss. Professor Hermand was involved in many facets of acoustics research and outreach and I had the pleasure of having him as my Ph.D. co-supervisor for the last four years of his life. As an advisor, Professor Hermand always gave thoughtful advice and was devoted to the highest quality work. As an experimenter and colleague, his energy and enthusiasm were contagious. And as a friend, he was fiercely loyal and always knew the right time to relax. We worked closely on seagrass acoustics, one of the many subjects about which he was passionate. He first began in-situ experiments on acoustic propagation in seagrass meadows to measure oxygen production over two decades ago. Since then, he worked on numerous ex-situ studies aimed at acoustically characterizing seagrass and macroalgae. These past and current experiments will be reviewed using anecdotes about his mentorship.
