Excursion to Ancient Vergina

(including lunch)

Wednesday 18th of June, 09:00 to 17:00

Vergina, a must-visit destination for history enthusiasts, is famous for its archaeological significance as the site of ancient Aigai, the first capital of the Kingdom of Macedon. It is best known for the discovery of the Royal Tombs, including what is believed to be the tomb of Philip II of Macedon, the father of Alexander the Great.

Key Highlights of Vergina:

  • The Royal Tombs: In 1977–78, Greek archaeologist Manolis Andronikos unearthed a series of richly decorated tombs, one of which is widely accepted as Philip II’s. The tomb contained golden funerary artifacts, including the famous Golden Larnax, which held cremated remains.
  • The Palace of Aigai: The ruins of a grand Macedonian palace, featuring intricate mosaics and a large banquet hall, highlight the wealth and power of the Macedonian dynasty.
  • Theater of Aigai: This ancient theater, located near the palace, is believed to be the place where Philip II was assassinated in 336 BCE.
  • UNESCO World Heritage Site: Vergina is part of the UNESCO-listed Archaeological Site of Aigai, recognized for its historical and cultural importance.
  • Museum of the Royal Tombs: A modern underground museum has been built over the burial site, allowing visitors to see the tombs and their treasures in their original setting.
