Abstract: Striation patterns of the magnitudes of the pressure and the particle velocities are often seen due to the interference of the multipath arrivals at the receiver in the waveguide. The paper presented a simple two-path model to examine the interference behavior of the active and reactive acoustic intensities propagating along the horizontal and vertical axes. It’s found that for a near field source, the reactive acoustic intensities contain mainly the interference information between multipath arrivals. On the contrary, the summed energy of all the arrivals in active intensities would make up a large proportion and lead to the extraction of the interference information quite difficult. The derivative physical parameters based on the reactive acoustic intensities were also studied theoretically and experimentally with the broadband signals. Validation was conducted using data collected by a vector sensor in a lake trial.
