    Abstract: Jean-Pierre Hermand had strong theoretical foundation in sensing in Doppler and model-based match filtering [Hermand and Roderick, 1993; Hermand 1999]. At his 2nd employment at the Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation (CMRE) he was developing large scale ocean experiments. The Yellow Shark summer experiment in 1994 was the first of these (name was inspired by Frank Zappa!). The experiment was characterized by using all available resources at the Centre including four vertical arrays, and a permanent station on Formiche di Grosseto islands which was the headquarter. About this time, I had developed my SAGA code for inversion of acoustic signals. This code is based on state-of-the-art propagation models for replica generators, simple Gaussian likelihood functions sampled using genetic algorithms. Thus Jean-Pierre and I worked together on inverting the data and documenting the results [Hermand and Gerstoft, 1996].
