Abstract: Underwater acoustic communication is sensitive to the environmental conditions. To optimize the link autonomously, a reconfigurable platform is highly desired. In this work, a multiple-input multiple output (MIMO) reprogrammable physical layer is implemented to enable a software defined modem (SDM). An Alamouti space-time block code is proposed to improve the reliability. The focus is on the physical layer, and a platform is implemented to test the communication link reliability for a bit rate as high as 30 kbps, and for a range approaching two kilometers.
