Abstract: The detection and identification of munition buried below the seabed remain challenging up to this day. Within the EU project BASTA (Boost Applied munition detection through Smart data inTegration and Artificial intelligence workflows) we have studied the potential of ultra-high-resolution 2D and 3D sub-bottom profiling (SBP) to provide more accurate information on the depth and size of buried munition objects. The study provides an extensive field test using a multitransducer parametric echosounder, including correlation with magnetic and high-resolution multibeam data. The identification of buried munition objects on SBP data appears to be influenced by the acquisition mode and sedimentary environment. Although 2D data provide detailed imaging, they may miss objects located away from the track line. Therefore, high-quality 3D data with good resolution and accuracy are necessary for reliable object detection. However, the identification of buried munition targets on 3D data requires careful consideration of several factors, such as data formats, gridding parameters, and object size.
