Abstract: In this work, lateral target strength (TS) measurements of Atlantic Bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) are presented. Measurements were carried out using a Furuno FCV 38kHz split beam echosounder. In situ TS values from several individual tuna were obtained during the 2022 fishing season near the Balearic Islands in Western Mediterranean Sea. Echosounder and omnidirectional fisheries sonar data (Furuno FSV-25) were simultaneously used to record Atlantic Bluefin tuna schools. During the fishing campaign, the netCDF files were recorded using an echosounder. TS data from each school were studied to obtain a representative value. The methodology developed in this work implies the possibility of using a tool to estimate tuna size during catching.
