Abstract: Totaling over 50 instrumented sites, Ocean Networks Canada’s (ONC) cabled observatories cover the three coasts of Canada. These include the VENUS coastal observatory in the Salish Sea (installed in 2006) and the NEPTUNE offshore deep-sea observatory in the Northeast Pacific Ocean. Each observatory includes a set of nodes providing continuous power and high bandwidth communications to a number of sites. At each site ONC (a University of Victoria initiative) operates and maintains a range of ocean and geophysical sensors providing high-resolution, multidisciplinary time series, the longest of which cover a time span of over 16 years. Acoustic data recorded by a number of single hydrophones and (more recently) four volumetric arrays constitute the vast majority of the 430+ GB of data collected daily by ONC’s sensors and archived. From the busy, relatively shallow waters of the Salish Sea to the 2600 m depth of the Cascadia Basin, these installations cover a variety of environments. This presentation illustrates examples of scientific studies and results obtained from the analysis of ONC’s acoustic data in the region, such as long-time-series ambient-noise changes during the “COVID anthropause,” the detection of distant earthquakes, source localization by the arrays, soundscape characterization at a hydrothermal-vent field and bioacoustics applications.
