Abstract: The new generation of regional ocean models provide the evolution of both the slow (hydrostatic) and fast (compressible) components of pressure, the latter being associated to acoustic waves. Such models open original opportunities to investigate the acoustic noise generated by slower oceanic processes (Wunsch, 2022).\nIn this study, we use the compressible version of Croco (Coastal and Regional Ocean Community) to evaluate what it may bring to underwater acoustics. Respect to conventional ocean circulation model, the non-Boussinesq version of Croco (www.croco-ocean.org, namely CROCO-NBQ) has a full 3D fast-mode solver which enables an explicit resolution of the full Navier-Stokes equations (i.e. compressible and non-hydrostatic, without any assumption of the time and space scales targeted). As it also includes the treatment of newtonian fluid sediment in the bottom, CROCO-NBQ can provide accurate numerical solutions for acoustic waves generation and propagation even in challenging environments. It is of primary interest for modelling noise generated by ocean flow, but it may also be pertinent for very low frequency acoustic wave modelling in complex environment.\n\nPreliminary results are presented and discussed in various applications such as noise generation by ocean dynamical structures, interaction of acoustic waves with surface or internal waves and also 3D propagation. It is shown that CROCO-NBQ provides promising insights to fill the gap between ocean dynamics modelling and acoustic waves generation and propagation modelling at very low frequencies.
