Abstract: A three-dimensional finite element model of a porous medium was constructed, for the case of water-saturated porous materials, using the codes SPECFEM2D and SPECFEM3D. The model features straight and regular pores in a visco-elastic frame, with a constant, complex bulk and shear moduli consistent with a constant-Q visco-elastic material. A range of porosities were realized. The model has an upper frequency limit dictated by the size of the mesh elements, and a lower frequency limit determined by the external dimensions of the model. Within the frequency range of the model, the presence of the Biot fast and slow waves was demonstrated, as well a shear wave. The attenuation of the Biot waves is shown to be consistent with a constant-Q visco-elastic frame and the Biot-Stoll model. [Work supported by ONR, Ocean Acoustics Program]
