Abstract: The measurement facility at Loch Goil Scotland, run by QinetiQ on behalf of UK MOD, provides a deep-water sheltered sea loch for underwater acoustic measurements. QinetiQ has a long history of measuring Target Echo Strength (TES), complemented by mathematical modelling, stretching back more than four decades. \nTES measurements of structures larger than about 1m are challenging in a tank environment due to a number of constraints including object size, reverberation and far-field distances. Measurements of TES in large open water spaces, such as Loch Goil, alleviates many of these difficulties.\nTESSMEX models have recently been measured over a five-octave frequency band up to 100kHz. The time and frequency domain TES results are discussed, along with an overview of the capability in terms of the environment, equipment and experimental design. \n
